Internships provide valuable experience to future caregivers

Three Houston County women received nursing experience through an internship program this summer at the Lutheran Home in Caledonia.
The internships were funded from a contract with the Office of Rural Health and Primary Care, Minnesota Department of Health.
Megan Dobbs
Megan Dobbs of La Crescent will be a sophomore at Winona State this year. She is majoring in nursing and worked in Roseview Court Assisted Living. During her internship, she organized social and recreational activities for the residents. ěHer experience also included an educational component where she job shadowed healthcare professionals and researched different disease processes. The staff and residents have greatly enjoyed Meganís enthusiasm and energy during her internship at Roseview,î said Sally Bergstrom, Roseview Court home care director.
Rachel Graf
Rachael Graf, a senior this year at La Crescent High School, said sheís wanted to be nurse since she was six years old.
She worked in the nursing home and assisted residents with outings and worked with them one-to-one.
Graf is working toward become a CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant).
Kendra Johnson
Kendra Johnson, a freshman this year at Winona State, originally of La Crescent, also worked at the Lutheran Home assisting residents. She said being an intern gave her experience watching what nurses have to do. According to Marian Rauk, assistant administrator director of nursing, ěKendra and Rachel were a great help in the paperwork of our facility, also. During their time with us, they followed different healthcare entities to expose them to the whole picture of what being in healthcare is all about. The residents and staff will miss having these two wonderful young ladies around. We appreciate giving them a view of the healthcare field.î
