Dale Spiegler

Dale Burton Spiegler, 76, of Waukon, IA, died of cancer Thursday, December 5, 2002 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. He was born on November 10, 1926 in Caledonia, MN, the son of John and Ella (Meyer) Spiegler. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Lukeís United Church of Christ in Eitzen, attended rural elementary schools near Dorchester, and graduated from Waukon High School in 1945. He entered the U.S. Army immediately after school and served as a Corporal from June of 1945 until October of 1946.

Following the service, Dale returned to Waukon where he went to work for the Connor & Peyton Ford dealership. On May 17, 1949, he married Dolores Zupke at St. Johnís Lutheran Church in Waukon. In 1957 he purchased the auto business and operated Spiegler Auto from the same location until 1989. For several years after that he transferred cars for Dick Sullivan and other local dealerships. The past six years he has worked for the Waukon Standard Newspapers.

Dale was a member of St. Johnís Lutheran Church, American Legion, Waukon Golf and Country Club and the local athletic booster club. He enjoyed being outdoors and loved to hunt and fish. He also liked to bowl, golf and play cards. He was very fond of several pet dogs he had over the years. Dale loved being with his family. He and Dolores had a special celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary in May of 1999. Together they made considerable efforts to follow all of their childrenís athletic activities through their high school and college careers.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Kris (and significant other, Norma Anderson), Dubuque; two sons, Bob (Karen) Mankato, and Dave (Annette) Spiegler, Evanston, IL; three grandchildren; a brother, Glen (Luella) Spiegler, Waukon; and a sister, Arvilla Ohlgren, Minneapolis.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Dennis; and an infant sister, Dorothy May.

Services were held Monday, December 9, 11 a.m. at St. Johnís Lutheran Church in Waukon with Rev. Lynn Groe officiating. Burial with military rites were in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Friends called from 3-7 p.m. Sunday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.
