Mildred Margaret Caffrey, 89, formerly of McIntire, died Saturday, November 23 at the Riceville Community Rest Home in Riceville. Mildred was born on July 16, 1913, at Ventura, to John C. and Maude (Thomas) Grell. She attended school at Ventura Consolidated School and graduated in 1931. After graduating, she attended Iowa State Teachers College and taught in rural school during the 1931-32 school year. She was married to Virgil Caffrey, of Swaledale, on August 15, 1933, at New Hampton, and to this union, two daughters, Leora and Geri, were born. During the teacher shortage, she returned to college and taught for 35 years in schools in Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas and Minnesota-the last 19 years at Caledonia. She is survived by two daughters, Leora Huddleston, of McIntire, and Geri Martin, of Schaller; seven grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren and a sister, Ruby Barlow, of Mason City. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers, Carl and Walter Grell; three sisters, Alice Barton, Nettie Zook and Cora Spurrier; a step-son, Darrell Caffrey, and two granddaughters, Becky and Diane Martin. Private family services were held at 1 p.m. on Monday, November 25 at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Riceville with the Rev. Michael Carey officiating.
