ZoÎ Lidstrom, John Salo winners in Spelling Bee

A challenging academic event took place at Caledonia Area Elementary School on Tuesday, February 12. The 2002 District Spelling Bee was held Tuesday afternoon for students in 5th and 6th grade and Tuesday evening for students in 7th and 8th grade. There was a total of 26 students representing St. Johnís School, St. Maryís School, and Caledonia Public School. At the afternoon Spelling Bee the 5th and 6th grade students spelled a total of 21 words from the official national spelling word list before ZoÎ Lidstrom was victorious with the word ìcourseî. During the evening Spelling Bee, John Salo successfully spelled ìOlympianî in the final round after 37 words had been pronounced to the 7th and 8th grade students.

The students who represented St. Maryís were Ryan Goetzinger, David Jergenson, Pat Bolduan, Alex Klug, Ashley King, Megan Buttell and Craig Halverson. Students representing St. Johnís were Adam OíHeron, Caleigh Snodgrass, Britney Kruckow, Craig Loeffler, Eliza Crawford, Jordan OíHeron and Clint Grabhorn. Participating students from Caledonia Public School were Cullen Becker, Maria Drenckhahn, Teresa Gauger, ZoÎ Lidstrom, Heidi Miller, Clint St. Sauver, Katie Jambois, B.J. Meyer, Kasey Stokman, Vanessa Nelson, Annie Palen and John Salo.

The words were pronounced to the students by Connie Hesse, Caledonia Area Elementary principal, at both the afternoon and evening Spelling Bee. The judges who assisted Mrs. Hesse at the afternoon Spelling Bee were Carolyn Medin, Jana Dittmer and Karen Loging. The evening Spelling Bee judges were Percy Lingen, Jon Hahm and Betty Schwartzhoff.

ZoÎ and John received blue ribbons, $ 10, and coupons from Subway. Second place winners, Cayleigh Snodgrass and Megan Buttell earned red ribbons, $8, and Subway coupons. Cayleigh and Megan will be the alternates if John and/or ZoÎ is unable to attend the Regional Spelling Bee in Rochester. As third place winners, Adam OíHeron and Clint Grabhorn were presented with a white ribbon, $5, and a Subway coupon. All of the students who participated in the district Spelling Bee were given a certificate of participation and a Subway coupon. The District spelling Bee was coordinated by Sherri White, Media/Enrichment Director.

ZoÎ and John will advance to the regional Spelling Bee in Rochester on February 26, 2002, hosted by the Southeast Service Cooperative Service. Four regional winners will advance to the Minnesota State Spelling Bee on March 26 at St. Johnís University in Collegeville.
