Fire claims hay shedPosted: 1/30/02 An unattended fire spread to some grass and then to several buildings at the Darrell Neumann farm on Windy Hill Road in Jefferson Township. The Caledonia Fire Department was dispatched tot he scene about 1:10 p.m. Friday to assist the New Albin Fire Department. Fire departments from Brownsville and Lansing also responded. Matt Hoscheit and Dan Stemper, two Caledonia volunteer firemen who happened to to on their way out of town on Friday, noticed the smoke and went to the location, arriving about the same time as the New Albin Fire Department. When firemen arrived on he scene, a hay shed, machinery shed and a hog barn were on fire. According to Caledonia fire chief Chuck Gavin, high winds made fighting the fire difficult. The hay shed was complete loss, but the other buildings were saved. January is not usually known for grass fires, but the unusually warm and dry weather creates a situation similar to a spring fire season, said Gavin. ©The Argus E-Mail: editor.argus@ecm-inc.com |
