Kelleher is new chair of county boardPosted: 1/8/02 By Shannon McKinney Houston County Commissioner Kevin Kelleher is the boardís newest chair with Dave Corcoran being voted as vice chair for 2002. They were chosen at the Thursday, January 3 board meeting. County will have special levy for capital equipment Houston County Auditor Peter Johnson informed board members that he is in the process of securing a financial advisor and bond attorney for a special levy for $161,600 for capital equipment. The special levy will be used for equipment for the highway department and is included in the 12.5% levy that the board approved. The county will have to borrow the money until they are able to pay it back. Because the county is under levy limits, the state has made special provisions for paying for items that cost more than the regular levy. Board received response on ABC bus grant Kelleher reported on information he received from ABC (Ability Building Center) in response to a letter written by Tom Ready of Ready Bus Line which expressed disappointment for ABC applying for a grant that Ready Bus Line normally received from the state. Ready provided transportation services for elderly and and/or persons with disabilities for ABC Works (formally Networks) clients. Now, ABC wishes to use grant money that Ready once received to set up its own bus for those services. Kelleher explained that ABC had an issue with Ready Bus Line not having air conditioning. A few times last summer, the bus couldnít be used because of the heat. ABC also feels it can manage the bus cheaper than it would cost to pay Ready. In the letter, Ready said it would cost the taxpayers ìmuch more money to operate.î Ready also expressed concern for losing $49,000 in revenue base for providing the service. Board accepts newspaper bids Bids were accepted by the board for publication of the legals, financial statement, delinquent tax notice, miscellaneous notices and minute of the board meeting. The four newspapers in the county are The Houston County News, The Caledonia Argus, The Spring Grove Herald and the Houston Banner. They will share in the income from the publications. ©The Argus E-Mail: editor.argus@ecm-inc.com |
