Local man hurt in July 4 accident in New York StatePosted: 7/23/02 Daniel Forrester, 21, of Caledonia remains in the intermediate care unit of University Hospital, Syracuse, New York, after being hit by a car the evening of July 4. The accident occurred near Sylvan Beach following a fireworks display. His family was given few details about the accident, but know that it was not a hit and run. His chances of recovery were increased thanks to the efforts of an EMT who was not on duty but assisted at the scene. Dan was airlifted to the hospital and surgery was performed to remove a blood clot in his brain, according to his grandmother, Mary Colsch. The extent of the brain damage he suffered will not be known for a while. His left leg was also crushed in the accident, and he is currently battling a fever. His grandmother said that the family was encouraged on Sunday when he opened his eyes. ìWeíre hopeful. Weíve always had hope,î she said. Dan will probably remain in the hospital a long time, and will probably need a long period of rehabilitation. Colsch and Danís mother, Sharon, remain in New York. His father, Mark, was to return Tuesday. Dan is the oldest of their 11 children. A musician, Dan was in New York preparing to tour with his band when the accident occurred. A fund for the Forresters has been set up at Community First Bank in Caledonia, and there are also donation cans at various businesses throughout the city.
