Volunteers sought for sesquicentennial committeePosted: 7/23/02 Volunteers are meeting to plan a celebration in observance of the 150th anniversary(sesquicentennial) in 2004 of the founding of Caledonia by Samuel McPhail. Interested residents are invited to attend planning meetings which are held the third Wednesday of every month at 4 p.m. in the basement of Community First Bank. It is hoped that civic and church groups in Caledonia will send representatives to the planning meetings and sponsor events during the celebration. Some plans are already being made to mark this special occasion. A group of quilters will be making a sesquicentennial quilt, and there are plans for a contest for a button and logo. There are also plans to produce a sesquicentennial cookbook and have commemorative pottery for sale as a fund-raiser. Some ideas that have been discussed are a Civil War reenactment or rendezvous; an old-time ball; fashion show featuring styles from the last 150 years; a parade; Sesquicentennial run; all-school reunion and beard contest. The Caledonia time capsule buried in 1954 will be opened in 2004. The success of the celebration will depend on volunteers who will plan and carry out activities. A great deal of work will also have to be done ahead of time to raise funds for special events during the celebration. If you are part of a group, or are an individual interested in helping, please attend a meeting. The next meeting is September 18. ©The Argus E-Mail: editor.argus@ecm-inc.com |
