Hauser, Burg golf 100 holesPosted: 7/30/02 By Shannon McKinney This is definitely one time when Ken Van Den Boom, Caledonia High School girls golf coach, doesnít mind eating his words. Jacquelyn Hauser of Caledonia and Megan Burg of Eitzen accomplished what had never been done before after Van Den Boom told them they couldnít do it. The girls spent the entire day, Tuesday, July 23, golfing 100 holes for 11 rounds of golf at Ma Cal Grove Country Club. The idea for the 14 hour day came on the way home from a golf tournament. Burg and Hauser were on the girlsí varsity golf team this year and will be in 10th grade. Burg recalled, ìWe had a bet with the coach. He didnít think we could do it. He said eight rounds would be pushing it.î The girls did more than push that day. They scheduled tee times for every hour and averaged an hour and five minutes per round. ìWe had to hustle,î said Hauser. It also helped that the weather was a perfect 70 degree day with low humidity and other people on the course let them through. VanDenBoom told The Argus that he was impressed and surprised. ìItís never been done. Itís unusual for a school with this girls golf tradition that somethingís not been done.î He added, ìThey were two very determined girls, and you know I like that.î Both girls had best scores of 41, but only laughed and wouldnít say when asked what their worst scores were. The day after, Burg and Hauser said they felt good, not too sore. However, they donít have any plans on repeating the feat, at least not on this course. ìItís too long,î said Hauser. ©The Argus E-Mail: editor.argus@ecm-inc.com |
