Five face charges following fight Memorial weekendPosted: 6/11/02 By Shannon McKinney The Houston County jail was filled to overflowing Sunday, May 26, when five men were arrested after a report of a fight on 615 W. Washington Street in Caledonia. The jail has a 14 person capacity and the arrests filled the jail to 17 individuals. One of those arrested required the use of an Arabic interpreter from St. Louis Park, Mn, which cost the county $240 in interpreter fees. According to four witnesses, Abdulla Azrag Ismail Kafi, 20, of Rochester, was seen swinging a baseball bat inside the house, trying to hit several people. Witnesses also said Kafi struck a female in the face with his open hand. Kafi is being charged with felony second degree assault, fifth degree assault and minor consumption. At the time of the arrest, Kafi required ambulance service due to a large cut on his neck. He was scheduled to appear in court yesterday, Tuesday, June 11, at 1:00 p.m. and will require the services of an interpreter again. Other arrests When Caledonia officer Jim Logan was dispatched to the house at 5:42 a.m., he saw no one outside. He did, however, see a vehicle leave the residence and proceed north on State Hwy. 44. After effecting a traffic stop, he learned that the four occupants had been at the house but had not heard of a fight. While at the traffic stop, another vehicle pulled up and two women said that there were some people who were trying to break into the house. Logan and officer Alan Johnson responded immediately and found a four door Lincoln Town Car in the driveway occupied by four individuals. As Logan went to frisk the individuals for weapons, an Awar Salvatory Longar, 22, of Rochester, resisted arrest by refusing to keep his hands on the car during the frisk and struggling against Logan as Logan tried to handcuff him. Logan succeeded in subduing Longar by using a pressure point technique. Longar was arrested for disorderly conduct, obstructing legal process and fourth degree assault. Other individuals, Fred Joseph Bona, 22, of Rochester was arrested for disorderly conduct for becoming uncooperative and verbally abusive while his friend was being arrested. He was charged with disorderly conduct. Morgan Scopas Kenyi, 20, of Rochester, was arrested for false information, minor consumption, display of another drivers license and failure to transfer ownership. A fifth individual, Attmad Jammal Basley, 28, of Milwaukee, WI was arrested for third degree DWI. ©The Argus E-Mail: editor.argus@ecm-inc.com |
