Tire slashings reportedPosted: 6/18/02 By Shannon McKinney Police are investigating a string of tire slashings that occurred between Monday night and early Tuesday morning, June 10 and 11. Caledonia Police Chief Duane St. Mary said 18 cars had tires slashed. He estimated it would cost about $1,600 to replace the tires, which does not include the additional cost of a tow or for the labor to change the tires. The slashings followed a trail from East Grove street to Pine Street to East Grant Street. After receiving a few calls Tuesday morning, St. Mary said he followed the trail and even reported the slashings to some victims who were unaware it had happened. He said tire slashings happen, but it has been a long time since it has happened like this. The slashings have caused an inconvenience for most people. One party was visiting in town from another part of the state and had to schedule alternative arrangements. Some tires had to be specially ordered from La Crosse because stores in Caledonia did not carry them. Karl Poston on East Grant Street reported that his trampoline was slashed. St. Mary said they are working with some information they already have. One person reported hearing a popping sound outside their house at about 2:30 a.m. on South Pine Street. The person did not go outside because it was raining. One individual had three cars with tires slashed. Some of the vehicles that were vandalized were parked in the ownerís driveway. St. Mary encouraged people to call Crime Stoppers who will pay cash rewards of up to $1,000 to persons furnishing information leading to the arrest and filing of criminal charges against the perpetrators. Callers do not have to reveal their identity. You may call 507-724-5122 or mail information to Houston County Crime Stoppers, PO Box 106, Caledonia, MN 55921.
