Meeting tonight on Highway 16 project

The Minnesota Department of Transportation is hosting an informational meeting on Wednesday, March 13, to discuss the Highway 16 improvement project from Hokah to Highway 26.

Mn/DOT plans to reconstruct Highway 16 from Highway 44 in Hokah east to the junction of Highway 26 (Millerís Corner). As part of the project, four bridges and four culverts will be replaced, and the roadway will be regraded and resurfaced. Construction is scheduled to begin in mid-May 2002 and will continue into the fall of 2003.

The project will be divided into three segments:

ï The north segment from the intersection of County Road 21 to Highway 26 (1.6 miles). Construction will begin in May and this segment will be open to traffic in November 2002.

ï The middle segment from the Root River Bridge in Hokah north to County Road 21 (1.2 miles). Construction will begin in May 2002 and continue through the fall of 2003.

ï The south segment (in Hokah) from the Catholic Church to the Root River Bridge. Construction will begin in early June 2003 and be completed in late August 2003. Access will be maintained to businesses and residences, but no through traffic will be allowed between County Road 18 and County Road 7 in Hokah.

During the north and middle segments of the project, Highway 16 and Highway 44 through traffic will be detoured to County Road 7 and Highway 26 (Detour A). During the south segment construction, Highway 16 through traffic will be detoured to County Roads 25 and 21 (Detour B). Highway 44 through traffic will be detoured to County Road 18 and Highway 26 (Detour C).

The open house and informational meeting on March 13 will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Hokah fire hall. A formal presentation will begin at 6 p.m. but the public is welcome to attend earlier to view project maps or ask questions of Mn/DOT staff.
