Luella Smith

Luella A. Smith, 97, of Spring Grove and formerly of Onalaska, WI, died Saturday, March 16, 2002, at The Lutheran Home in Caledonia, MN, where she had been a resident for the past four years.

She was born July 17, 1904, in Tomah, WI, to John and Mamie (Schreiber) Prise. On November 4, 1922, she married Josiah B. Smith; he died on May 11, 1964. She worked as a shoemaker at the La Crosse Rubber Mills in La Crosse. She was a member of Waterloo Ridge Lutheran Church in rural Spring Grove. She was a wonderful cook and baker and loved her family very much.

She is survived by six sons, Richard (Dora) Smith of Onalaska, Robert (Bonnie) Smith of La Crosse, James (Vonnie) Smith of Ocala, FL, Josiah (Mary) Smith of Mountain Home, AK, Donald (Margaret) Smith of Universal City, TX, William (Eileen) Smith of Gurnee, IL; two daughters, Carol (Richard) Bruring of Abberville, SC, and Jean (Mike ěLuckyî) Volkenant of Spring Grove; 22 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Josiah B. Smith.

Services will be held Wednesday, March 20, at 11 a.m. at Waterloo Ridge Lutheran Church, rural Spring Grove. Burial will be at the Onalaska Cemetery in Onalaska. Friends may call Wednesday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church only.
