Lloyd Duxbury

Lloyd L. Duxbury Jr., 80, of St. Paul and formerly of Caledonia, died Saturday, March 23, 2002, at St. Josephís Hospital, St. Paul.

He was born February 1, 1922, in Caledonia to Lloyd Sr. and Valerie (Coon) Duxbury. Lloyd received his high school education at Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, New Hampshire. On August 14, 1943, he married Rosemary Tyler. Lloyd served in the United States Army from 1943 until 1946. He then received his B.A. degree from Harvard University in 1947 and his J.D. degree from Harvard Law School in 1949. Lloyd then returned to Caledonia where he practiced law with his father until 1969. In addition to his law practice, Lloyd was elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives in 1950. He would go on to serve in the House as Minority Leader from 1959 until 1962 and as Speaker of the House from 1963 until 1970. After leaving the House of Representatives in 1970, Lloyd served as vice-president for Burlington Northern Inc. from 1969 until 1981, and then as president of the Railroad Retirement Association from 1982 until 1986. From 1987 until 1989 he would serve as a professional staff member for a Senate Special Committee on Aging and from 1989 until 1999, he served as legal counsel for a national committee to preserve Social Security and Medicare. Lloyd also was a member of the Bar Association in the states of Minnesota and Virginia and the District of Columbia. He was an active member of the Alumni Associations for Phillips Exeter Academy and Harvard University and Law School.

He also continued to be a member of the Loveless-Eikens American Legion Post 191 and VFW Post 3833 both in Caledonia. Survivors include 2 children, Marna Duxbury of North St. Paul, and David (Margaret) Duxbury of Amery, WI, 3 grandchildren, and 1 brother, John Duxbury of Rochester. Lloyd was preceded in death by his wife on October 2, 1999, his parents, and a brother, Myles Duxbury.

Funeral services will be Thursday, March 28 at 1:00 p.m. from Immanuel Lutheran Church, Caledonia. Rev. Rolf T. Storlie will officiate. Burial with military honors will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Caledonia. Friends may call at Immanuel Lutheran Church on Thursday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred. The Haugen-Roble-Jandt Funeral Home, Caledonia is in charge of arrangements.
