Virgil Wohlwend

Virgil J. Wohlwend, 69, of Brownsville, MN, and formerly of Onalaska, WI, died Sunday, March 24, 2002 in Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse, WI. He was born in Wabasha, MN on June 7, 1932 to Joseph and Marie (Fleis) Wohlwend. He married Jane Peterson-Gantenbein on August 11, 1967 in St. Patrickís Catholic Church in Brownsville. Virgil was a graduate of Portage High School in Portage, WI. He was a Veteran of the Korean War serving our country in the US Army. Virgil started his employment in Portage, WI, as the Manager of Woolworth Dept. Store. He then worked for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company for 18 years and then he owned and operated his own American Family Insurance Agency in Onalaska, WI, until his retirement in 1997.

Virgil was an avid Green Bay packer fan and enjoyed woodworking and furniture building. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends on the Mississippi River. He also enjoyed traveling with his wife and his time spent during the winter months in Lake Havasu, AZ. Virgil enjoyed the time he shared with his beloved grandchildren. He will be sadly missed by his wife, family and friends.

He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Karen (Kip) Kotterman, Greenfield, WI, and Kristine (Rodney) Vetsch, Hokah; one son Steven (Cindy) Wohlwend, La Crosse; two step-sons, Mark (Judi) Gantenbein, Brownsville, and Anthony Gantenbein, Brownsville; 10 grandchildren; one sister, Susan Hayes, Portage, WI; and one brother, Ronald (Barb) Wohlwend, Sebring, FL.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Kenneth Hudson and one sister, Virginia Hendricks.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am Wednesday, March 27 at St. Patrickís Catholic Church, Brownsville, with the Rev. Paul Breza officiating. Burial to be at a later date. Friends and family called from 4-7 pm on Tuesday at the Blaschke Funeral Home, 401 West Ave, La Crosse with a Vigil held at 7 pm. Friends and family may also call from 9:30 until the time of services in Breza Hall at St. Patrickís Catholic Church, Brownsville Wednesday.
