Caledonia AAA students chosenPosted: 3/5/02 By Shannon McKinney Caledonia High School Seniors Nathan Renk and Stephanie Jandt both feel honored to have been chosen for the AAA award, recognizing them for their participation in athletics, academics and arts. Renk is the son of Robert and Julie Renk and Jandt is the daughter of David and Liza Jandt. Both were surprised to be chosen. Jandt said, ìOur grade especially has a lot of people who are into the arts and sports.î Renk said math class comes easiest for him, while Jandt excels in business classes. Jandt is ranked second in her class, while Renk is ranked 19th. Renk Renk began playing the trombone in fifth grade. He said, ìI was lucky because my uncle played it, and I just pulled it out of the closet.î Renk has since gotten his own instrument and has been successful earning excellent and superior ratings at sections as a junior and also excellent ratings at state competition. He participated in the Dorian Honor Band last year. Sometimes his musical and athletic talents mix. Renk plays football, basketball and baseball. Many times during half time at home football games, Renk could be seen playing the trombone in his football uniform. Of all three sports, football his favorite. He plays the tight-end position and has played on varsity 9th through 12th grade. He was on the academic all-conference football team all four years of high school and was voted all-conference his senior year. He played varsity baseball four years, and varsity basketball three years. Jandt Jandt has played piano since second grade and the clarinet since fifth grade. Her favorite musical instrument is the piano. ìYou can be more expressive; thereís so much more you can do,î she explained. She has received superior ratings at the woodwind trio contest and performed in the Dorian Honor band last year as a junior. She plays volleyball and golf, volleyball being her favorite sport. ìItís hard to decide. Both teams are a lot of fun to be on,î she said. Jandt first began playing volleyball by going to Scott Koepkeís elementary school camps in third grade. Jandt plays the setter and utility hitter positions. Jandt has played on varsity golf and volleyball all four years of high school. She was as state participant in golf last year and a team alternate the previous year.
