Memorial Day programs to be held this weekend

Services will be Saturday at County Veteransí Memorial
In addition to the individual city Memorial Day programs, the Houston County American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars will be conducting a Memorial Service at the Houston County Veteransí Memorial, Houston County Courthouse, Caledonia, at 10:30 am, Saturday, May 25.

Colin Marnach will sing the National Anthem and Chaplain Don Keefe will offer prayer.

Guest speaker will be Tom Schuttenbauer, Past National Sergeant at Arms.

Carol Sweeney and Colin Marnach will sing the Navy Hymn.

Everyone is invited.

Caledonia

Memorial Day services will begin on Monday, May 27, at the Caledonia High School gym at 9:30 am with advancing of the colors. The National Anthem will be played by Caledonia High School Band. The Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts will take part in the ceremony and lead the Pledge of Allegiance.

The CHS band will play the Navy Hymn and service songs.

Scholarship awards will be awarded by the American Legion and Auxiliary and VFW and Auxiliary. The Gold Star parents will be honored.

There will be a placing of the wreath by the Commander of the VFW 3833 and the Auxiliary President, followed by the Benediction, the Firing Squad, Taps and Retiring of the Colors.

New Albin

Memorial Day services will be held at 9 am at the New Albin Community Center, New Albin.

All Veterans, VFW members, Ladies Auxiliary, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and Brownies will meet at 8:30 am at the center. Please bring your flags.

The program will be as follows: Invocation, Rev. Daniel Knipper; Band Selection by Kee High Band, Director Jane Remmen; Gettysburg Address, Kelsey Konkel; Address, Rev. Paul Burgess; Benediction, Rev. Daniel Knipper.

After the program, military taps will be at the center and also at St. Joseph Cemetery. Leon Hosch will be MC. Everyone is welcome.

Houston

Memorial Day services will be held in the park on Monday, May 27, at 10 am. In case of inclement weather, services will be held at the Community Center. County Commissioner Kevin Kelleher will be guest speaker. We will be honoring our local heroes from the fire department, ambulance crew and auxiliary police.

The Houston School band will play and the Boy Scouts will place the wreath.

Brownsville

Memorial Day observances, Monday, May 27, will begin in Brownsville at 10 am at Zion Evangelical Cemetery with memorial rituals by VFW Post 6801 and the Ladies Auxiliary.

A program will be held at the Community Center with Jessica Woods as guest speaker at 10:30 am. She is a member of the Wisconsin National Guard and will tell about her experiences in Nicaragua.

Following a march to the river to place a wreath, a potluck dinner will be served at the Center.

Hokah

Memorial Day services in Hokah will begin at 8 am, Monday, May 27, with the placing of a wreath at the Root River bridge in memory of those servicemen buried at sea. Then at 8:15 am there will be the placing of a wreath at the Convent Cemetery, rural Hokah.

The parade will begin at the City Hall on Main Street at 9 am led by the American Legion Post 498 and Auxiliary Color Guards and the La Crescent/Hokah School Jr. Band. School children, 4-H clubs and other groups are urged to join the parade.

A short rest is scheduled at the Hokah City Park. The band will play and an address will be given buy Jim Sauer, a La Crosse Central High School teacher and a former Hokah resident.

The parade will continue on to Mount Hope Cemetery where a short address will be given by Pastor Dave Possing of the Hokah Community Church. A wreath will be placed on the cross, the firing squad will salute the dead, followed by Taps and a band selection.

The parade will proceed on to Mount Calvary Cemetery where a prayer will be given, a wreath will be placed on the cross, followed by the gun salute and taps and the band will play.
