Florence Evans

Florence M. Evans, 89, of rural La Crescent, MN, died on Thursday, May 23, 2002. She was born on July 19, 1912 in Money Creek, Houston County, MN, to Edward and Emma (Buchholz) McElmury. She was a graduate of Houston High School. She married Harold W. Evans on June 14, 1932. Together they farmed on South Ride, rural La Crescent for 20 years.

She was a member of the South Ridge United Methodist Church and was a charter member of its womenís organization. She had taught Sunday School, was the communion steward and was active in a variety of other roles at her church. Florence loved children. Many nieces and nephews enjoyed summer life on the farm thanks to that love. Her loved ones share memories of wonderful conversations, spirited games, full cookie jars and constant reinforcement of her love and interest in their lives.

Florence is survived by a son, Charles (Amy) Evans; a daughter, Lois McElhiney, both of La Cres- cent; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Harry (Hazel) McElmury of Lakeville, and Lester McElmury of Lewiston; one sister, Verna (Cy) Larson, Houston; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Harold in 1990, sisters, Dorothy McElmury and Hazel Ladewig, and brothers, Alfred and James McElmury.

Services were held Tuesday, May 28, 11 am, at the South Ridge United Methodist Church in rural La Crescent, with the Rev. Lora Sturm officiating. Burial was in the Prospect Hill Cemetery in La Crescent. Friends called from 5-8 pm on Monday at Hoff Funeral Homes-Houston Chapel and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the church.
