Violet Ann Norris, 74, died Thursday, May 23, 2002, at her beloved Houston, MN, home after a long and determined fight with ovarian cancer. She was born in Twin Valley, MN, on March 8, 1928, the seventh child of Ben and Josie Syverson. She married Norman Norris on December 26, 1950 and in 1961 they moved to their permanent home in Houston. Norman died there in May 1985 of cancer. For a few years she worked as a store clerk at Skiftonís Department Store and as a teller at the Houston Security State Bank, but for most of her life she was content as a homemaker. She was known for her love of riding her bike, concern for others, ability to sew wonderful things and her strong Norwegian roots demonstrated through her cooking traditions. During her younger years, she was active in Eastern Star, the American Legion Auxiliary and her church. Violet is survived by her four children, John (Mary Beth) Norris, Wabasha, Deborah (Larry Butler) Norris, Phoenix, AZ, Steven (Sherry) Norris, Hutchinson, and Michael (Maureen) Norris, La Crescent; three sisters, Shirley Saum, Verna Torfin, Jean Rhinehart; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She is preceded in death by her husband, two brothers, Hilary and Marvin, and two sisters, Bernice Eng and Norma Torgeson. Services were held Tuesday, May 28, 2 pm, at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Houston with the Reverend Louise Stromberg officiating. Following the funeral service, Violetís body will be cremated with burial in the Stone Church Cemetery, rural Houston. Visitation was from 4-7 pm on Monday and from 1 pm until time of funeral, both days at the church.
