CFD responds to shed fires

The Caledonia Fire Department was called to the scene of a shed fire at the Curt Steele residence on Prairie Ridge Road on October 26. Upon arrival, the crew attended to flames and smoke billowing from the south side of the building. Spring Grove tankers were called in to assist and, when the fire was disposed of, the shedís ceiling and south wall sustained light damage.

The fire took approximately one and a half hours to subdue. A cordless drill charger is believed to have started the fire.

In the late afternoon on October 31, the department was again summoned to the scene of a shed fire, this time at the Delbert Stehr residence on Whitetail Drive on Jefferson Ridge. A hay shed measuring 50 by 125 feet had caught on fire and, when fire fighters arrived, the roof was coming down and flames was ravaging the entire building. Tankers from Eitzen, New Albin, Brownsville, and Spring Grove were called in to assist. Nine trucks hauled water from Caledonia to the site for most of the night.

After the flames had been suppressed, a track hoe and a Caterpillar were used to bury the smoldering hay. Fire fighters remained on the scene until the job was completed at 7 a.m. Friday. Nearby barns sustained no damage,
