Drivers: don't pass in turn lanePosted: 10/15/02 by Andrew Miller Drivers who use the right turn lane as a passing lane at the Main Street/Highway 44 intersection may have had their last warning. The Caledonia Police Department says it will begin issuing tickets, rather than warnings, to motorists who insist on using the turn lane to pass. Though after-school traffic at the intersection is becoming progressively less busy, many drivers continue to use the right lane for passing, Police Chief Duane St. Mary stated. This poses a threat to safety, St. Mary said, because other cars at the intersection get the impression that the vehicle is turning rightñ a collision could easily result. Signs have been posted to indicate that the right lane is for turns only, but a multitude of drivers have neglected the admonitions. ìSooner or later weíll start ticketing, and the fine will be $95,î St. Mary said. School bus vandalism The Transportation Director for the Houston School District reported to Houston County authorities that, sometime between September 30 and October 4, vandals had damaged school buses in the Houston High School bus barn. Damage to the buses involved broken headlights, flashers, and turn signals. The Transportation Director stated that the bus vandalism is an ongoing problem. Saturday night ruckus Caledonia police, Houston police, and Houston County deputies were summoned to the Houston Liquor Store just after midnight on Sunday, October 13, after a report that ìa large crowd of intoxicated subjects had assembled,î according to Houston County authorities. A report from Caledonia police indicated that the the subjects had been fighting. No arrests were made. Burglary on South Winnebago Gary Oesterle of Caledonia reported to Caledonia police that his home on South Winnebago Street had been burglarized sometime between October 2 and October 6. The burglar appeared to have entered through a rear window. Approximately $200 in loose change was taken from two separate containers. Oesterle believes the burglar is someone familiar with the inside of the house, since the intruder took money from two separate containers, but neither stole nor damaged any other property. ©The Argus E-Mail: editor.argus@ecm-inc.com |
