Boxing fans treated to slugfest at "Fright Night"Posted: 10/30/02 by Andrew Miller All in attendance got their fill of hard-hitting, bone-crunching action at ìFright Night,î an amateur boxing competition hosted by the Caledonia Boxing Club on Saturday, October 26. Isaac Fruechte, an 11-year old local boxer with two Silver Gloves State Championships under his belt, showcased his talents with a solid performance against Ricky Haveron of Twin Ports, Duluth. Haveron held his own for the duration of the contest, but Fruechteís barrage of rapid-fire jabs were the deciding factor, earning Fruechte the win by decision. Nathan Shervin of La Crescent, another Caledonia Boxing Club member, squared off against Dwayne Caldwell of the 4th Street Rochester club. It was largely an even-sided bout, but Caldwell walked away with the victory, due in part to his uncanny ability to punch upwards. Shervin was a good six inches taller than Caldwell, but Caldwell compensated with solid body shots to Shervin. In the featured fight of the evening, Chad Tostenson of the Caledonia Boxing Club, this yearís Light Heavyweight Golden Gloves State Champ, went toe-to-toe with Dwayne Caldwell of 4th Street Rochester. Tostenson landed a long series of punches on a dazed Butler in the second round, but the judges decided in favor of Butler. Butlerís size and speed, even after the second round assault, proved too much. In other action, Dave Mahlberg (75 lbs.) of Twin Ports defeated Beau Mondeau of Chippewa Falls in the eveningís opening fight. Amanda Krier (130 lbs.) overpowered Ashley Karlen of Chippewa Falls, winning in the first round when the referee stopped the match. Another bout ended abruptly in the first round when Joe Mahr (125 lbs.) of Wisconsin Rapids knocked the wind out of Leroy Walters of Chippewa Falls. Tony Lee (130 lbs.) of Burnettes boxing club defeated Brendon Conner of Chippewa Falls in three rounds, and Paul Jereczal (160lbs.) of the Lions Den out of Winona defeated Adam Green of Chippewa Falls. Andson Griggs (160 lbs.) of Twin Ports prevailed over Mark Fosne of the Lions Den, and Dan Sokup (185 lbs.) of Chippewa Falls defeated Conrad Kroening of 4th Street Rochester. ©The Argus E-Mail: editor.argus@ecm-inc.com |
