4-H alumnus Rebecca Price is new Program CoordinatorPosted: 10/8/02 by Andrew Miller Rebecca Price, the new 4-H Program Coordinator for Houston County, is looking forward to providing area youth with the same kind of experience she had when she was a 4-H member. ìI was in 4-H for a long time and I really loved it,î Price said. ì4-H is a great opportunity for kids to learn about themselves and to grow. Itís a safe environment for kids to try new things and get recognition for what they do.î Raised on a farm in Ohio, Price spent eleven years as a member of 4-H, then served as a summer intern in the program for two years. In May, she graduated from Northwestern College in the Twin Cities with a major in biology and a concentration in Bible studies. She moved to Houston County in late September and began her tenure as 4-H Program Coordinator on October 1. The coordinator position was created as a result of restructuring in the County Extension Service in July 2002. Holly Kanengieter, who was formerly assigned solely to Houston County, is now the regional extension educator for 4-H in three counties. In order for Houston County to again have a 4-H representative on a day-to-day basis, the 4-H Program Coordinator position was established. The position, which involves planning 4-H events and promoting the program, is well-suited to Price, due in part to her experience as a member of 4-H. Lessons learned and skills acquired through the 4-H program, Priceís experience proves, can last a lifetime. ì4-H is where I learned my leadership skillsñ I was on the Junior Fair Board in Ohio and we basically ran the fair,î she noted. ìIn 4-H I learned a lot about responsibility and how to get a job done no matter how many hours it took.î The 4-H program in Ohio, she said, is in some respects different from the program in Minnesota. But the differences, she thinks, will give her the opportunity to incorporate new ideas into the program here, while at the same time continuing the tradition of unique learning opportunities that is the hallmark of 4-H in Houston County. ì4-H in Houston County is a great program,î she said. ìAnd I want to keep that going.î ©The Argus E-Mail: editor.argus@ecm-inc.com |
