Stolen car recoveredPosted: 4/22/03 by Andrew Miller Local authorities were successful in tracking down a stolen car just hours after it was reported missing. The Houston County Sheriffís Office received a 911 call at 2:20 a.m. on April 20 from Terrance Lee, who indicated that his 1990 Chevrolet Caprice had been stolen from outside his West Grove Street residence. Lee said heíd heard the car being started and begin travelling eastbound. All three sets of keys to the vehicle, he added, were accounted for. County deputies, Caledonia Police, and La Crescent Police immediately began a search. Preliminary attempts to track it down proved fruitless, but just before 6 a.m., Deputy Linda Coffield of the Sheriffís Office located the vehicle on East Grove Street. The vehicle was released to Lee after authorities had verified that it was in the same condition it had been prior to the theft. Law enforcement officials have placed the matter under investigation. Vandalism continues A spree of vandalism in the Caledonia area in recent weeks, which has included numerous tire slashings and window smashings, continued this past week, with three vehicles receiving the brunt of the damage. A Caledonia woman reported on April 16 that her 1995 Geo, being stored along East Main Street near the fairgrounds, sustained damage estimated at $4000. All of the carís windows had been broken and spray paint had been applied to two sides. A Caledonia man contacted authorities after two of his vehicles had been hit with rocks on April 15 while parked in the driveway outside his West Caledonia Street residence. The first vehicle received damage to the tailgate and right rear fender, and the second vehicle was damaged on the top of the trunk. The victim said he heard a vehicle drive by between 9:30 and 10 p.m. that evening, and several pieces of rock littered the driveway after the incident. Caledonia Police are investigating the reports of vandalism; no further information was available. ©The Argus E-Mail: editor.argus@ecm-inc.com |
