Leona Roeber

Leona Roeber, 86, of Tulare, SD died April 5, 2003 at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls. Her funeral will be Wednesday, April 9 at 10:30 a.m. at the Tulare United Church in Tulare. Rev. James Waisanen will officiate. Burial will be in St. Johnís Cemetery near Tulare. Visitation is Tuesday from 1:00 pm to 8:00 p.m. at Thelen Funeral Home in Redfield, SD.

Leona was born January 17, 1917 in Eitzen, MN to Richard and Emma (Wueneke) Pottratz. She grew up in Eitzen and graduated from Caledonia High School in Caledonia. After graduation she spent some time in Florida before returning to Eitzen. She married Melvin Roeber February 14, 1942. They moved to Tulare and they farmed southwest of Tulare until they retired in 1972. They moved into a new house they built in Tulare. Melvin died in 1991 and Leona continued living in Tulare staying active in the community.

Leona was a member of St. Johnís United Church of Christ where she was the church organist for many years. After St. Johnís closed she became a member of the Tulare United Church. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Tulare Senior Citizens.

She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, quilting, reading and crossword puzzles.

Leona is survived by two sons: Dennis (Kathleen) Roeber of Osage, WY; and Richard Roeber of Tulare; and two daughters: Bonnie (Ronny) Reiss of Stratford, SD; and Carol (Mark) Henstein of Rapid City, SD. She is also survived by twelve grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Melvin, one son John, one grandson David, two brothers Ben and George Pottratz and two sisters: Erma Staggemeier and Norma Paus.
