Should you hear a deep, guttural rumbling emanating from your innards, do not hesitate to traipse on down to the Copper Penny restaurant at the junction of Highways 26 and 3 in Brownsville for some hearty victuals.

Sure to quell appetites of all sizes and sate even the most discriminating palate, the menuís comestibles include salads, soups, and the Goldmine Specialñ a 1/3 pound burger topped with cheese and hash brownsñ during the day, and eggs, pancakes, and the Silver Dollar Specialñ an omelet with ham, mushrooms, and cheese on a bed of hash brownsñ at breakfast.

The restaurant opened this past Tuesday and is the brainchild of La Crosse residents Pat Sanders and Lana Twite, both originally from Caledonia. Lifelong cooks, opening the Copper Penny is something theyíd been looking forward to for quite some time.

ìThis is something Iíve always wanted to do,î Sanders said. ìThereís not really a restaurant in this immediate area, itís right on the highway, and thereís a great view of the river.î

Adding to the view is the restaurantís unique decor. Pictures from Houston Countyís past adorning the walls and an array of antiques behind the lunch counter give the room a nostalgic feel. Faux copper on the ceilings and finished wood counters create an ambience of relaxation, a perfect setting in which to partake of collations and confabulations.

The Copper Penny is open 6:30am to 8pm, Tuesday through Sunday, and is closed on Mondays. A grand opening celebration has been planned for Memorial Day Weekend, and Sanders and Twite expect to have a liquor license in the coming months.
