Mae Betz

Mae D. Betz, 91, of Caledonia, died Wednesday, December 10, 2003, at the Caledonia Lutheran Home.

She was born October 14, 1912, in Caledonia, to Leo and Louise (Betz) Kuhl. Mae attended and graduated from high school in Amery, WI. On September 12, 1933, she married William Betz in Harmony. They farmed in Mayville Township and then Cabbage Ridge, both in Houston County. After farming, Mae was employed at the Rubber Mills in La Crosse for a couple years. She then managed the Redwood Cafe in Caledonia from its founding until 1972. On January 5, 1985, Bill preceded her in death.

Mae was a member of St. Johnís Ev. Lutheran Church in Caledonia where she served on the Ladies Aid, Motherís Club, and as church custodian for many years until her retirement in 1997. She also was a member of the Houston County Post 3833 VFW Ladies Auxiliary, RSVP, and several card clubs. Mae enjoyed spending most weekends visiting with friends at the Lutheran Home.

Survivors include one daughter, Mary Ann Betz; one son, Stanley (Shirley) Betz, both of Caledonia; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one sister, Sadie Campbell of Oconomowoc, WI; one brother, Wilfred (Erma Gene) Kuhl of Amery, WI; and two sisters-in-law, Cora Kuhl of Amery and Helen Betz of Caledonia.

In addition to her husband, Mae was preceded in death by a son and daughter-in-law, Gordon and Carol Betz; one grandson, Aaron Varney; two sisters, Tillie and Louisa; and three brothers, Leo, Homer and Oscar.

Services will be Monday, December 15, at 11 a.m. from St. Johnís Ev. Lutheran Church, Caledonia. Rev. Tom Schultz will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Friends may call at Haugen-Roble-Jandt Funeral Home, Caledonia, on Sunday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and at the church on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
