Planning continues for cityís 150thPosted: 12/30/03 The Sesquicentennial Committee has ordered a quantity of banners to promote the cityís sesquicentennial year. The banners will feature the cityís recently adopted shield featuring icons of the seasons of the year and the words ìA City for All Seasons.î The banners will be hung from streetlights along Main Street and in the downtown area, depending on how many banners are ordered. Dianne Schuldt, one of the sesquicentennial organizers, said that 20 banners will be ordered to start, and more purchased as funds allow. The banners cost about $70 each. Individuals who would like to contribute towards the purchase of banners may send contributions to the Sesquicentennial Committee, in care of Community First Bank, 124 East Grove, Caledonia. Other plans related to the sesquicentennial celebration, which is June 11, 12 and 13, 2004, include signs and a mural recognizing Caledonia as birthplace of Dave Kunst, who is in the Guiness Book of World Records as the first person to walk around the world. Other events planned include an opening ceremony that includes fireworks, a rendezvous at the fairgrounds, opening of the time capsule buried in 1954, a sesquicentennial ball, an all-school reunion and a parade. The event will have a Scottish flair in honor of Caledoniaís founding father, Samuel McPhail. Items are currently being sold to help raise money for the event, including a pie plate, crock and throw. Sesquicentennial buttons are being sold for $5 at local businesses. Anyone interested in helping with the event is welcome to attend the next sesquicentennial committee meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 13 at 6:30 p.m. at the AmericInn. ©The Argus E-Mail: editor.argus@ecm-inc.com |
