Doris Vathing

Doris H. Vathing, 93, of Houston, died Sunday, February 23, 2003, at the Valley View Nursing Home in Houston. She was born on May 17, 1909, in Ivanhoe Minnesota, to Rudolph and Minnie (Fischer) Schulz.

She graduated from Ivanhoe High School in 1927 and attended Ivanhoe Normal School for one year and Winona Teachers College where she received her teaching certificate. After graduating from Winona Teachers College, Doris came to Houston, Minn. to teach 8th grade until she married Sigurd H. Vathing on June 12, 1934. They had been married for 64 years when Sigurd died in 1998.

Doris, a devoted mother and grandmother, also was active in many school and civic activities including P.T.A., Band Mothers, Houston School Board, Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star, Cross of Christ Lutheran Church and its choir, circles and ladies organizations.

She is survived by her two sons, Bob (Darlene) Vathing of Minnetonka, and Jim (Patty) Vathing of Plymouth; one daughter, Judy Williams of Houston; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Dolores Schulz Rans of Marshall, and Sylvia Vathing Anderson of Sun City, Arizona; and 11 nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Sigurd Vathing, her parents, and her brother, Howard Schulz.

Services will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, February 26, at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Houston with the Rev. Lane Zaffke officiating. Burial will be in the Stone Church Cemetery in Houston.

Friends may call from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday at Hoff Funeral Homes - Houston Chapel and one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the church. Memorials are preferred and the family asks that they be designated to the Cross of Christ Lutheran Lutheran Church Roof Fund.
