Historical Society envisions addition to existing museum

Posted: 2/25/03

The Houston County Historical Society is usually interested in things that are old. But this time, the Historical Society is seeking something newóa new building in which to exhibit its historical treasures as well as provide educational and interpretive opportunities for visitors.

The Society has recently undertaken a capital fund drive to build a 14,000 sq. ft. addition to its existing building at the Houston County Fairgrounds. The project is expected to cost about $700,000. The Society currently has about $100,000 in its building fund.

ìThis plan will take the needs of the historical society and its collections well into this century,î commented Shirley Johnson, president of the 42-year old Houston County Historical Society.

The plan calls for the current building to be refitted for a research center and library. The addition will be built behind the historical buildings on History Lane, which include the Sheldon Presbyterian Church, Flatten Swenson pioneer home, Mayville Town Hall and the Daley School. In addition, the present barnyard friends building will be restored.

ìOur design has been refined through several years of discussions and planning,î said Johnson. She noted that the growth of the society has been far beyond what was envisioned when the Society was founded.

ìOur all-volunteer groupís continued work is being seriously challenged by a lack of space,î said Johnson.

Johnson noted that interest in the work of the Historical Society continues to grow. Last year, more than 100 gifts were donated to the collection. With effective, interesting displays and demonstrations as well as special events, visitors will have the opportunity to appreciate our history.

The proposed building will have a visitorís center and gift shop near the front entrance. Geologic, historic and Native American timelines will put the countyís past into perspective.

Also planned is space for interactive displays and events and an exhibit featuring items from the former Palen Photo Studio. There will be a climate controlled storage area and drive-in basement. The entire building will be accessible to the handicapped.

ìThe time has come to look ahead, so the efforts and deeds of people past and present will be there for future generations,î said Johnson.

Anyone interested in being part of this effort or who would like to make a pledge or tax-deductible donation may contact The Houston County Historical Society at 725-3884, 104 History Lane, Caledonia, MN. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
