Arnold (Charlie) Milton Munkel, 85, of Spring Grove, died Sunday, June 22, 2003 at The Lutheran Home in Caledonia. He was born March 27, 1918 in rural Caledonia to Ulrich and Clara (Rask) Munkel. He was a lifelong area resident. He was a 1936 Spring Grove High School graduate. On August 25, 1943 he married Marion Klinge at Caledonia. She preceded him in death on July 27, 1987. In 1943 he entered the Army, he was in the European Campaign with the 7th Armored Division in WWII. He worked as a mechanic and welder for Houston County. He was a member of the Sons of Norway Valheim Lodge #364 in Spring Grove. He was an active member of the Spring Grove American Legion, holding many offices. He was on the planning committee for Syttende Mai and was King of Trolls for the celebration in 1993, he also helped construct the Munkel shelter in Camp Winnebago. Survivors include his three sisters, Alice Myhre and Ruth Diersen of Spring Grove and Doris (Martin) Bisping of Dorchester, IA; many nieces and nephews and many great nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Burnell; two sisters in infancy; two brothers-in law, Arnold Myhre and Elmer Diersen; one sister-in-law, Anna Munkel; and a special friend, Marian Moen. Services will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Spring Grove. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Pastor Zane Anderson will officiate. Friends may call Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. at the Roble Funeral Home in Spring Grove and one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.
