Counterfeit bill surfaces in CaledoniaPosted: 3/18/03 by Andrew Miller Caledonia Chief of Police Duane St. Mary has advised area businesses to be on the lookout for fake currency after a counterfeit $20 bill turned up at Community First National Bank on March 7. A cursory survey of the bill revealed it to be counterfeitñ it was cut off-center, the ink had run and was a different shade of green than legal currency, and there was no watermark or visible threading in the paper. Community First received the bill as part of a night deposit from a local business, and after speaking with employees of that business, who did not recall where it came from, police were unable to trace the billís origin. Though local authorities know of no other fake currency circulating in the area, St. Mary stated that businesses can take precautions to safeguard against receiving counterfeit money. A simple strategy, he said, is to acquire a counterfeit detector pen. The pens can be procured locally at Radio Shack for under $5. Theft from rock barn Edward Strong of New Albin reported to county authorities that his storage facility along CSAH 26 just north of New Albin had been broken in to. Several items were reported missing, including an outboard motor. The Houston County Sheriffís Office has placed the matter under investigation. ©The Argus E-Mail: editor.argus@ecm-inc.com |
