Memorial Day Services & Programs

Services Saturday at Veteransí Memorial

In addition to the individual city Memorial Day programs, the Houston County American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars will be conducting a Memorial Service at the Houston County Veteransí Memorial, Houston County Courthouse, Caledonia, at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, May 24.

Guest speaker will be Ron Levendoski of Brownsville. Carol Sweeney and Colin Marnach will sing.

Everyone is invited.


Caledonia

Memorial Day services will begin on Monday, May 26, at 9:30 a.m. at the Caledonia Middle/High School gym with advancing of the colors. Harold Heaney Sr. is the MC. The National Anthem will be played by the Caledonia High School Band. The Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts will take part in the ceremony and lead the Pledge of Allegiance.

Guest speaker will be Retired Air Force Nurse, Major Rosanne Hargrove.

Armed Forces Salute will be performed by the CHS Band.

Scholarships will be awarded by the American Legion and Auxiliary and awards given by VFW and Auxiliary. Gold Star mothers will be honored.

The Commander of the American Legion and the Auxiliary President will place the wreath followed by the Benediction, the Firing Squad, Taps and Retiring of the Colors.


Spring Grove

Services for Memorial Day will be held on Monday, May 26, beginning at 10 a.m. A parade will proceed at 9:45 a.m. from the school to the park. Gary Buxengard, Post Commander, will welcome everyone and the Spring Grove High School Band, under the direction of Kyle Haugen will play ěThe Star Spangled Bannerî. Invocation will be given by Pastor Leonard Liptack of Faith Lutheran Church of Blackhammer. The Scouts will decorate crosses. There will be a Firing Squad Salute by the American Legion.

Guest speaker will be Rob Gross of Spring Grove. Since October 1999 Rob has worked as the Houston County Veteran Service Officer and Emergency Management Director. Rob is currently the Judge Advocate and Education Chair for the Minnesota Association of County Veteran Service Officers and has been nominated for Vice President of MACVSO.

Rob married Amy Lukes and they have one daughter, Kaitlyn.

In case of inclement weather, the program will be held in the school auditorium.


New Albin

Memorial Day services will be held at 9 a.m. at the New Albin Community Center, New Albin. All Veterans, VFW members, Ladies Auxiliary, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and Brownies will meet at 8:30 a.m. at the Center. Please bring your flags.

The program will be as follows: Invocation, Rev. Robert Levenhagen; Band selection by Kee High Band, directed by Jane Remmen; Gettysburg Address, Abby Harmon; a winning speech, Betsy Fruechte; Address for 2003, Rev. Ed Lechtenberg; Band Selection; Benediction, Rev. Robert Levenhagen.

After the program military taps will be played at the Community Center and also at the City Cemetery.

Everyone is welcome.


Brownsville

Brownsville Memorial Day observation will begin at 10 a.m. Monday, May 26, with ceremonies at Veterans Cemetery, conducted by members of VFW Post 6801 and the Ladies Auxiliary. There will be a memorial program at the Community Center at 10:30, followed by a march to the river.

Everyone is welcome to attend a potluck dinner at the center at noon.


Houston

Memorial Day services will be held in the park on Monday, May 26, 11 a.m. In case of inclement weather, services will be held at the Community Center. Jasmine Breault will sing the National Anthem.

Lt. Col. Dennis Meyer will be the guest speaker.

The Houston School band will play and the Boy Scouts will place the wreath.


Hokah

Memorial Day services in Hokah will begin with a parade at 9 a.m. starting at City Hall and proceeding to the city park where Jim Sauer, a La Crosse Central High School teacher and former Hokah resident, will speak. Then they will continue on to the cemeteries on Highway 16.
