Future Problem Solvers place at statePosted: 5/6/03 Nine Caledonia High School students competed in the Future Problem Solvers state competition April 26 in Plymouth, MN, and five students placed among the top three in their divisions. Sophomore Julia Quanrud earned first place in the scenario writing competition, for which sheíd written a story about sports medicine entitled ìRunnerís High.î The story is set in the future and focuses on a runner who, experiencing patellofemoral pain, opts for exploratory surgery, which eventually leaves her unable to walk. Judges chose Quanrudís story over the stories of 17 other competitors, likening the prose to that of Hemingway and hailing it as, ìdeceptively simple, with a powerful undercurrent of important themes.î Quanrudís first place finish qualified her for the Future Problem Solvers international competition at the University of Connecticut in early June. Also at the state meet, a team consisting of seniors Paul Whitesitt, Nicole Heintz, Chris Kemp, and Steven Neumann presented research theyíd done on DNA identification. Among 21 teams from around the state, they placed third in the oral competition.
