Meeting November 20 for development of Houston County TrailsPosted: 11/11/03 Interested people are invited to attend the next meeting for the Support and Development of Houston County Trails on Thursday, November 20, 6 pm, at the Spring Grove City Hall. At the meeting, we expect to have maps that identify all existing trails in Houston County, including those within cities, hiking, equestrian, and snowmobile trails. Discussion will continue about multi-use as well as non-motorized trails and ways that different use groups may be able to collaborate. One goal is to develop a coordinated long range plan for trails in Houston County. Meetings that began in April 2003 have included discussion of trail extensions to connect Houston County cities with the Root River, Preston ñ Harmony trails, and La Crosse trails via La Crescent. Several discussions have been facilitated by Jean Meyer, MNDOT and have been enhanced by the special La Crescent Bicycle-Pedestrian Planning Study that is part of the Greater La Crosse Planning Area Comprehensive Plan. Most of the communities in Houston County have been or are involved in some trail effort(s), some within their cities and others to renew trail efforts that had previously stopped for various reasons. All of our local governments are struggling with budget cuts, however, we can explore and prepare for new opportunities to enhance our economies and look to the safety and health benefits of trails that can connect our communities and provide safe off-road alternative transportation for students, working individuals, and visitors. Townships that may be affected by trail extensions in Houston County have been involved in these meetings as well.
