George Williams

George W. Williams, 83, of La Crescent, died on Saturday, October 4, 2003, at the Franciscan Skemp Medical Center, La Crosse. He was born on January 7, 1920, in rural Houston County, MN to William and Alma (Halverson) Williams. He married Doris Mades on May 24, 1947, at the home of Dorisí sister and brother-in-law, Adelia and Leonard Wolff in La Crescent. On March 2, 1949, George was baptized and confirmed at English Lutheran Church in La Crosse by the Rev. Harold N. Stoffel.

George Served in the United States Army during World War II, serving with the 826th Aviation Engineers, Company A. He later received the Liberte Medal from the French government for his service in the liberation of France. He was a member of Gittens-Leidel American Legion Post 595, La Crescent.

George worked for the G. Heileman Brewery for 40 years before retiring in October of 1985. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed farming. George was an avid gardener and loved to share the wealth of his garden with co-workers and neighbors. George was a loving husband and father and a devoted grandpa, who dearly loved his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Doris; a daughter, Corrine Williams, Caledonia; two sons, George (Lisa) Williams, Dakota, and Dale (Terri) Williams, La Crescent; three grandchildren; two sisters, Ruth Vetsch and Fern Williams, both of La Crescent; one brother, Maynard Williams, Goldendale, WA; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Clifford Williams and Robert Halverson.

Services will be held on Tuesday, October 7, 11:30 am at First Ev. Lutheran Church, La Crescent. The Rev. Paul A. Ibisch will officiate. Burial will take place in the Bush Cemetery, rural Dakota. Friends may call at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crescent on Monday from 5-8 p.m. and at the church on Tuesday from 10:30 am. until the time of services.
