Pumpkin, Sunflower contest this weekend

The Houston County Master Gardeners say, ìbring us your ugliest, your largest, your shaped-most-like-a-pumpkin, and weíll judge the entries.î

4-H and Open Class contestants need to have their entries in Spring Grove near the Gazebo in Viking Memorial park by 9 am Saturday, October 4. Judging will occur from 9:00-11:00 and prizes will be awarded in each class (4-H and Open) in the following categories:

ï Largest Pumpkin-1st, 2nd, 3rd

ï Shaped most like a pumpkin- 1st, 2nd, 3rd places

ï Ugliest

All entries must be clean and have no holes and no rotten spots. Pick entry the morning of the weigh-in. Hint: Cover it with a wet cloth to transport.

Upon arrival at the Viking Memorial Park: Start at the Weigh in Station. The attendant will register you and record the official weight. Your photo will be taken here. Next turn in your growing journal at the table if you are a 4-Her. Finally, locate it in a prominent place in the park to be on display until Sunday. Pick-up time is 4 pm. Each contestant is responsible for removal.

Those who enter sunflowers Snoopy says: Bring a unit consisting of head, stem and root. Start at the Measuring Station where you will be registered and official measurements will be recorded. Your photo will be taken at this time. 4-Hers will turn in their growing journal at the table.

4-H ONLY- Bring your journals of measurements you made periodically as the pumpkin grew, photos, interesting things you did to be successful.

Prizes will be awarded. Every contestant will receive a participation award and a photo of you and your pumpkin taken at the park.

Categories are the same in Open Class and 4-H Class:

Pumpkins

Heaviest

Shaped most like a pumpkin

Ugliest (only 1 prize)

Sunflowers

Largest circumference

Tallest plant

Most Beautiful (only 1 Prize)

First, second, and third prizes will be awarded in each category. All 4-Hers who register will receive a participation award.
