FCCLA group heading to state convention

A group of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) students from Caledonia High School will compete at the organizationís state convention April 21-24 at the Sheraton Hotel in Bloomington.

The students will be in 10 STAR events. STAR stands for students taking action with recognition. They will be competing at the state level to advance to the national level.

Students that have the opportunity to advance are:

ï Michael Kruckow and Anne Ellingson, who are competing in the Entrepreneurship category.;

ï Nathalie Besse is presenting the Chapter Service Manual. She organized a ìscrap bookî type manual explaining all the chapterís activities and service to the school/community.

ï Katie Schutz has been working on her STAR event ìFocus on Childrenî since last fall. She wanted to work with young children and teach them about the importance of nutrition. Katie met with Mrs. Klugís and Mrs. Newgaardís kindergarten students twice a month, making posters, reading, creating a cookbook and trying new foods and snacks.

Danielle Frank and Katie Jambois also participated in the ìFocus on Childrenî STAR event. They have been working with the 6 - 8th graders on bullying and child abuse not just with statistics but focusing on the global issue of child abuse.

Other students that will be competing for Minnesota-only events are Clare McCarthy, Laura Roesler, Allison Wagner, Caitlin Myhre, Christen Schieber, Ellen Klug, Brooke Christian, Danielle Frank and Katie Schutz.

Five freshman, Ellen, Christen, Danielle, Brooke and Katie S., will compete in the FACS (Family and Consumer Science) of Lifeskills competition.

Allison Wagner and Caitlin Myhre created a video by interviewing Caitlinís grandfather. This is the Veteranís Project. FCCLA has teamed up with the AARP organization to gather veterans stories. The best video will be submitted to the Library of Congress.

Allison and Laura have each submitted an essay to the Laws of Life Essay category.

Laura and Clare will both compete in ìEveryday Equationsî taking a test to test their knowledge when it comes to math problems in the FACS curriculum area.

Two other students who will be attending the state convention are Alyssa Frank as our voting delegate and Megan Hartley as a chapter delegate.

Nathalie Besse is also a regional officer candidate for Region 1. Michael Kruckow is the State-Vice President of Community Service.
