The Houston County board approved the purchase of a Ford Explorer to replace the squad car that was totaled in an accident March 6.

Commissioner Kevin Kelleher gave his approval Tuesday, April 13, with the stipulation that the departmentís 1986 Chevy camouflage truck be sold so as not to have too many vehicles on hand. His suggestion was unanimously upheld by the commissioners.

Before reaching a decision, board members had a chance to look at the sheriffís current inventory of vehicles.

Commissioner Dave Corcoran suggested the sheriffís department replace the squad car with an unmarked Chevy Impala that had been used by Bob Reider, a retired off

Lt. Ken Frank explained that the department would like to have the SUV available for towing, specifically for the countyís water patrol boat, for off-road criminal investigations, for inclement weather and for transporting prisoners during inclement weather.

Sheriff Mike Lee added that the vehicle would also be used for towing the trailer for the drug task force.

Commissioner Ann Thompson pointed out again that the sheriffís department has saved money from there being a shortage of deputies on the force. ìYouíve had quite a savings in salaries and benefits. You could add it up and see if thereís room in your budget for a new vehicle.î

Sheriff Mike Lee responded, ìIt sounds like a good way, but to be honest I havenít looked at that.î

He added, ìYeah, if you put it in numbers and cents, thank you, youíre right.î

Commissioner Thompson approved the purchase of the Crown Victoria that had been budgeted for replacement and for the Ford Explorer, but stipulated that the SUV be paid for with funds from the sheriffís department. Her stipulation was also unanimously upheld by fellow commissioners.
