Two plead guilty in oil vandalism

Two of the four people charged in an oil-dumping vandalism incident in La Crescent on May 19 have pled guilty to four counts of criminal damage to property.

Kevin Humfeld, 18, Dakota, made his plea on July 29. Sentencing by Judge James Fabian in Third District Court will be on August 30 at 4 p.m.

Christopher Glen Barnes, who will be 18 on August 17, La Crescent, made his plea on July 26 in district court, juvenile division. He will face a disposition hearing on August 30 at 3 p.m. with Judge Fabian.

Both individuals pled guilty to two counts of criminal damage to property in the first degree, a felony, and two counts of criminal damage to property in the third degree, a gross misdemeanor.

The maximum penalty they can receive is five years in jail and a $10,000 fine.

The cases of two other men charged in the incident, Russell Robert Hunt, 18, of Caledonia; and Tyler Wieser, 18, of La Crescent; are still pending. Each face three counts of criminal damage to property in the first degree, a felony. They were summoned into court and charged on May 27.

The criminal complaint states that they transported eight or nine pails of oil in the back of a pick-up belonging to Humfeldís father, and dumped the used motor oil on eight vehicles on the night of May 19. The vehicles belonged to six students and two teachers from La Crescent High School.
