Officer to appear in court Jan. 5
Caledonia Police Officer James Stemper is scheduled to appear in court in Buffalo County Wisconsin on January 5, 2005, on charges of reckless driving and endangering safety, a misdemeanor, and resisting or obstructing an officer, a criminal offense.
Stemper entered a not guilty plea on the traffic charge on November 2. A court trial scheduled for January 5 has been postponed.
The charges stem from an incident on September 11, 2004, in which Stemper is accused of leading a Winona County law officer on a chase into Buffalo County, Wisconsin, and then fleeing on foot, leaving his motorcycle behind. According to the complaint, when Stemper was contacted by authorities he denied that he was the person who was driving the motorcycle.
If found guilty of the criminal charge, Stemper faces the possibility of jail time. He is currently on paid administrative leave from the Caledonia Police Department.
