Borghild Knutson

Borghild M. Knutson, 92, formerly of Houston and Stewartville, MN, died February 11, 2004 at the Mercy Health Care Center, Homewood, IL. Borghild was born March 20, 1911 in a log house in Black Hammer Township, Houston County, Minnesota to Christian and Malinda (Seglem) Glasrud. She was the 5th child in a family of eight that included siblings Sigrid (Myrah), Maria (Vaaler), Julia (Newhouse), Peter, Olga (Mathison), Helen (Sullivan), and George.

Borghild was confirmed in 1925 at Trinity Lutheran Church. She graduated from Spring Grove High School in 1929 and attended one year of Teacherís Training. She taught at the Yucatan School, Yucatan Township, from 1930-1933. She then taught at the Tin Box school near Freeburg for two years and also taught in the villages of Freeburg and Mendota, MN.

She married Maurice Knutson on June 25, 1937 and they farmed for nearly 40 years. Borghild was a homemaker and she taught at the Brick School in Yucatan during 1945 because of a shortage of teachers.

Borghild was active in the Black Hammer Lutheran Church. She loved gardening, quilting, reading and was a great cook. Maurice and Borghild moved to a retirement home in Sheldon Township in 1975. After retirement and her husbandís death in 1976, she enjoyed traveling. She moved to Stewartville in 1991 to be near family and in 1997 moved to Park Forest, IL.

Borghild is survived by two sisters (Olga and Helen) and one brother (George); two daughters, Phyllis (David) Beckman and Melinda Knutson (David Ford); seven grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband, four siblings, and a daughter, Dianne (James Fynboh).

Memorial services will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, Park Forest, on Saturday, February 21, at 1 p.m. and at Zion Lutheran Church, Stewartville on March 20, at 1 p.m. Burial will be in Black Hammer Lutheran Church Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Salvation Army or the charity of your choice.
