New postmaster installed in Eitzen

Deb Shuda was installed as the new Eitzen postmaster on January 23 at the Eitzen post office.

She replaces Lil Kalash, 66, who has retired.

Terry Meyer, former Caledonia postmaster who now works in Winona, introduced Shuda by saying, ìSheís going to do a fantastic job.î

Shuda told the 20 people who were watching, ìThis is a really well-kept, thriving little town. From what I hear, I have some big shoes to fill.î

She worked as a postal clerk in La Crosse and Caledonia before getting the Eitzen postmaster position. Ray Johnson, Caledonia postmaster, said he is sorry to lose her.

Kalash, who had worked there since 1982, is ending her career due to health reasons. ìI wanted to stay here till I died,í she said.

Eitzen is a good community, Kalash added. ìThey really work together, as evidenced by the July Fourth celebration.î

ìItís going to be hard to replace you, Lil,î Terry Meyer told her. Meyer was filling in as manager of postal operations for the 559 zip code postal area.
