County filing deadline is Tuesday
Citizens who want to run for public office are reminded to file by Tuesday, July 20. Here are the local offices that are up for election.
School board, ISD #299
Residents who want to run for Caledonia School Board can file at the district office at 511 West Main Street (in the elementary school building).
Three four-year positions are open on the ISD #299 board. They are currently held by Barb Hurley, Dave Klinski, and Suzanne Roesler.
A primary election will be held if more than twice as many candidates file as there are at-large seats up for election. So for Caledonia, if seven or more candidates file, a primary must be held.
This yearís primary is September 14. If no primary is required, the election will take place during the General Election on Tuesday, November 2.
Houston County
Three Houston County Board of Commissioner seats will be up for election this fall. They are all for four-year terms.
ï District 1, which encompasses La Crescent City - 1st Precinct, and La Crescent City - 2nd Precinct. Larry Graf, La Crescent, has held this seat since 1993.
ï District 3, which encompasses Caledonia City - 1st Precinct, Caledonia City - 2nd Precinct and Caledonia and Mayville Townships. Ann Thompson, Caledonia, has held this seat since 1993.
ï District 5, which encompasses Black Hammer Township, Spring Grove City; and Spring Grove, Wilmington, Eitzen City, Winnebago, Jefferson, and Crooked Creek Townships. Nels Gulbranson, Spring Grove, has held this seat since 2001.
People can file an affidavit of candidacy with Houston County Auditorís Office in the courthouse in Caledonia. The cost is $50.
Soil and water district
The Root River Soil and Water Conservation District Board of Managers has three openings, all for four year terms. They are:
ï District 3, which covers Black Hammer, Spring Grove, and Wilmington Townships and Spring Grove City. Glenn Kinneberg is the current supervisor.
ï District 4, which covers the cities of Caledonia and Eitzen, and the townships of Mayville and Winnebago. Vern Fruechte is currently the supervisor.
ï District 5, which covers Houston City, and Houston, Money Creek, Sheldon, and Yucatan Townships. Joseph McManimon is the current supervisor.
Filing at the county auditors office can be done through July 20. The cost is $20. For more information, call the Root River SWCD at 507-724-5261, ext. 3. There is no salary, although supervisors receive per diem and expenses.
SWCDs are local units of government that manage natural resource programs. Minnesota has 91 SWCDs; their boundaries usually coincide with the county lines. Each SWCD is run by a board of five elected supervisors.
