Gas leak was false alarm

A bad smell from a dumpster caused some concern in Caledonia on July 8.

A passerby knocked on the police departmentís door at 304 East Main Street that Thursday evening to report a strong smell of what seemed to be natural gas nearby.

Fire department personnel were called. They barricaded Main, Marshall, and Grove Streets, shut off the gas line, and called the gas company.

Gas department workers could not find a leak, so firemen searched searched for the source of the smell, and found that it was coming from a dumpster.

ìWe didnít actually dig in there to find out what was in there,î fire chief Chuck Gavin said.

The entire incident took about half an hour, he estimated.
