Board filing July 6-20
Three seats open in District 299
Posted: 6/22/04
Want to run for school board? A new law requires you to make your decision to file for election earlier than ever before. The filing period this year is July 6 through July 20.
The change in the filing period is due to a new law regarding primary elections. Legislative action in 2003 requires school districts to conduct primary elections under two circumstances:
ï For school districts with election districts: A primary must be held if more than two candidates for a specified position file for election.
ï For school districts with at-large positions: A primary must be held if more than twice as many candidates file as there are at-large seats up for election. An example: If a district has four at-large seats open and nine or more candidates file, a primary must be held. Most school districts in Minnesota have at-large elections.
The Caledonia Independent School District No. 299 has at-large elections.
Prior to the new law, all candidates were printed on the ballot regardless of how many had filed. Top vote-getters won the available seats.
In order to comply with the new primary law, the candidate filing period for school boards is now in July. Again, the filing dates for the 2004 election are July 6 through July 20. Before the primary law, the candidate filing period for school boards was in late summer.
This yearís primary is September 14. A district must notify the county auditor of its intent to hold a primary by Friday, July 23.
Three four-year positions are open on the District 299 board. They are currently held by Barb Hurley, Dave Klinski, and Suzanne Roesler. Klinski and Roesler do not plan to run again.
