Flying in for flapjacks

The annual Fly-In, Drive-In Breakfast at the Houston County Airport began on a near-perfect Sunday morning. A tradition for 37 years, the event attracts a good crowd due in part to the hearty breakfast of eggs, sausage and pancakes, but probably more because of the opportunity it offers to see a variety of small aircraft, meet the pilots, and perhaps even ride in one of the planes.

One of the pilots who attended was Jon Lamphier of Albert Lea, who pilots a 1977 Beechcraft V-tail Bonanza. He said he and other pilots appreciate the Houston County Airport because of its location. ìWhen other airports are fogged in, itís one of the few that is visual. You can wait out the fog if you are not instrument-rated. Itís a safe stopping point,î he commented. ìItís important to aviators in the area.î

About 755 breakfasts were served. Dale Scobie of the Red Barons Flying Club said the Houston County fly-in breakfast is probably the longest continuing one in the state. It has been held every year since 1968, the year the airport was dedicated.

Fifty-five planes arrived for the event and represented many local communities as well as ones from Waterloo and Cedar Rapids in Iowa and Albert Lea, Rochester and Austin.
