Man recovering following quarry fall

A Department of Natural Resources worker is slowly recovering from injuries he sustained in a fall at a local quarry on June 7.

Jason Danielson, Chatfield, was moved out of the intensive care unit at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center on June 24.

His supervisor, Randy Mell, said that Danielson, 30, is now able to eat on his own, and will start occupational therapy on June 28.

He underwent surgery on June 19, during which two titanium rods were placed in his back to stabilize it. Mell said that Danielson could move his left and right arm, could wiggle his toes, and could move his right leg after the surgery.

Danielson, a seasonal worker for the DNR, was marking state forest boundary lines in Crooked Creek Township when he fell at the quarry north of the Reno state forest campground. He fell 30 feet to the quarry floor and tumbled another 20 feet through the rubble.

He had multiple fractures, including three in his back, and a head injury. Rescue workers transported him by truck to Hillside Road, then by ambulance to Paradise Point on Highway 26 north of Reno, then by helicopter to Gundersen Lutheran in La Crosse.
