Old Fashioned Ice Cream Social is Sunday, June 13

Enjoy ice cream, homemade cakes, and refreshments at the Old Fashioned Ice Cream Social at the county fairgrounds in the dining hall on Sunday, June 13, from 2-5 p.m.

From 2-3 p.m. the Caledonia Community Choir, under the direction of Elliott Kranz, will perform. This event will be a good way to relax with friends and neighbors at the close of the Sesquicentennial celebration.

The social is sponsored by the Houston County Historical Society as a fundraiser for the museum building addition.


Community Choir to sing at ice cream social

The Caledonia Community Choir, under the direction of Elliot Kranz, will be performing during the Ice Cream Social at the Houston County Fairgrounds on Sunday, June 13, 2 p.m. The choir will be singing old time and patriotic songs, accompanied by Sibyl Floyd.

Choir members are: Carolyn Tornstrom, Judy St. Mary, Bud Marnach (soloist), Bob Zimmerman, Roland Deters, Mike Novak, Todd Krueger, Ed Ferkingstad, Dave Jandt, Delores Burg, Pam Wynn, JoAnn Novak, Janice Dokken, Janice Renslo, Susie Frank, Marilyn Nelson, Iona Novak, Kathy Bailey, Sandie Lord, and Peggy Eggert.

Registration open for run/walk event

Everyone is invited to participate in the Run/Walk and kidsí run sponsored by Tri-County Electric. The event will be held June 12 beginning at the Caledonia Middle/High School. Registrations will be accepted up until the start time.

For the 5K run/walk, registration is $10 with a sesquicentennial button, $15 without. Runners will receive a water bottle and T-shirt. The run/walk begins at 8:30 a.m.

The kidsí run is $5 per entrant. Distance depends on age. Each runner received a certificate, food coupon and ribbon. The event begins at 10 a.m.

A dedication of the park side of the Wall of Honor will take place in Veterans Memorial Park on Saturday, June 12, at 10:30 a.m. Nearly one hundred additional name bricks have been installed on the park side of the Wall of Honor since the original construction and dedication several years ago. In addition, the center section of the new wall recognizes the Caledonia and Loretto High School Viet Nam Veterans from the Class of 1968 who served their country. Individuals and families who have purchased a brick since the original construction are cordially invited to attend this dedication as well as the general public. Father Gerald Kosse, a Loretto High School graduate of the Class of 1968, will present the invocation and benediction.

Sesquicentennial story-telling video opens Thursday

A sesquicentennial story-telling video has recently been completed and will debut this week.

The video, produced by Julie Stafslein of Caledonia High School, was a project of the Caledonia Performing Arts Council. It features Caroline Heimerdinger who tells stories of homemaking on the farm; Lolita St. Mary and Bev Link, who remember the operator days of the old Caledonia Telephone Service; Genevieve Molling and Leonette Eikens, who talk about life on the farm and rural education and Helen Johnson, who talks about her half-century at Helenís Beauty Shop. A feature of the video is a segment called : ìWhat is it?î with Caledonia Elementary students.

The video will be shown at the City Hall Information Center Thursday through Saturday, and at Caledonia High School during events there Friday and Saturday evening. It will be playing at the fairgrounds on Sunday.

The story-telling video will be played on the local cable channel the week of June 14.


All-school reunion planned for Saturday

All CHS and Loretto Alumni and invited to an All-school reunion will be held on Saturday, June 12 at the new high school commons from 4ñ7 p.m. A short program is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Snacks and refreshments will be served.

If you have memorabilia you would like to display, you may drop it off at the high school during the day on Thursday or Friday, June 10 or 11 or bring it with you to the reunion.

Participation encouraged at beard, costume contests

Men are welcome to participate in the Samuel McPhail look-alike and beard contests, and ladies can show off their vintage clothing at the Period Dress Revue the opening night of the sesquicentennial.

Entries for those events will be taken up until the starting time of 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 12.

The events are part of the Rotary Internationalís 100th birthday celebration which will be observed by the Caledonia Rotary during the celebration. A short program will be given by the Rotary.

The opening events culminate with the opening of the 1954 time capsule at 8 p.m. at City Hall.
