John Tveiten, Houston County Sheriffís newest deputy, chose to help people instead of ducks.

Yveiten had originally gone to college to be a game warden, but changed his mind because he wanted to be more useful to the public.

Tveiten grew up in Polk City, WI, a town of 700. After high school, he spent three years in the Navy. In 1995, he made a trip to the Persian Gulf to help enforce a trade embargo on Iraq.

He has a natural resources degree from Itasca Community College in Grand Rapids, MN and a law enforcement degree from Hibbings Community College in Hibbing, MN.

After college, he took a position as a police officer in Webster City, Iowa, which has a population of 9,000. He has worked there for the past four years.

Tveiten describes himself as an outdoorsman who enjoys hunting, fishing and camping. The beautiful area is one of the reasons he chose to work in Houston County. Also, he can be closer to his wifeís family, who live in upper Michigan.

He has a two-year-old daughter named Ava and a 13-year-old stepson named Tyler.

Tveiten says heís getting established and looking forward to a place to call home. ìIíve felt very welcome since Iíve been here,î he said.

Tveiten began work four weeks ago.
